In light of recent events, the Council also wishes to address a separate but concerning matter.
Over the past few days, Ilfracombe Town Council staff have been subjected to incidents of verbal abuse from members of the public while carrying out their day-to-day duties. In several instances staff have been shouted at and accused of “not doing enough” to address rough sleeping in the town
Ilfracombe Town Council would like to make it clear that our staff have no authority to move individuals on or to remove or touch personal belongings. Despite this our staff continue to do their best to assist and to signpost concerns to the appropriate agencies.
Ilfracombe Town Council will not tolerate abuse of any kind towards its staff. Our officers are dedicated to assisting residents and visitors wherever possible and will always endeavour to direct enquiries to the relevant authority when a matter falls outside of the Town Council’s remit.
Ilfracombe Town Council continues to work proactively with North Devon Council and Devon & Cornwall Police to discuss the situation and to explore how all agencies can best respond to the complex challenges around homelessness and public safety in the town.
We would like to remind residents that Ilfracombe Town Council is a parish-level authority with limited resources. Despite this, our staff work hard to bridge gaps where services are no longer being delivered locally by both District or County councils.
The Town Council thanks the community for its understanding, cooperation, and continued respect for our staff as they serve YOUR town.
