Ilfracombe Town Council is seeking a reliable, motivated and hands-on Facilities Officer to help maintain and care for council-owned buildings, grounds and public facilities.
This varied role is ideal for someone who enjoys practical work, takes pride in maintaining high standards and enjoys working both indoors and outdoors.
Location Based at: The Ilfracombe Centre, 44 High Street
Reporting to: Proper Officer & Senior Facilities Co-ordinator
Salary Range: £25,000 – £27,000 depending on experience
Status: Permanent
Days of Work: Monday to Friday with occasional weekends
Hours: 37.5 hours per week
Holidays: Pro rata equivalent of 20 days plus the 8 bank holidays
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out general building maintenance and minor repairs to council properties and facilities
- Perform routine cleaning of council offices, community buildings, and public amenities
- Maintain outdoor areas including gardens, footpaths, and recreational spaces.
- Undertake grass cutting, hedge trimming, weeding, litter collection, and seasonal grounds maintenance
- Set up and dismantle equipment for council and community events.
- Conduct regular inspections of buildings, equipment, and outdoor areas, reporting maintenance issues where necessary
- Ensure facilities are clean, safe, secure, and presented to a high standard.
- Operate and maintain tools, machinery, and council vehicles safely.
- Assist with emergency flood defences
- Follow all health and safety procedures and contribute to a safe working environment
What we’re looking for
Essential:
- Experience in building maintenance, property maintenance, facilities management, or a similar role
- Practical skills in basic repairs, maintenance, and general handyman tasks
- Experience in cleaning and grounds maintenance
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Good communication and organisational skills
- Physically fit and able to undertake manual work in all weather conditions
- Full, valid driver’s licence
Desirable:
- Experience operating grounds maintenance equipment
- Knowledge of health and safety regulations
- First Aid certification
- Relevant trade qualifications or maintenance certifications
