Thank you to Ilfracombe in Bloom for inviting me along to say a few words!
Ilfracombe in Bloom started back in 1985. It was started by Margaret Sutcliffe and is still going strong now 40 years later. 40 years is particularly impressive for any group of volunteers to keep an organisation together for so long.
People come and go, momentum wanes, personalities clash… it’s not easy. So firstly I applaud you all for keeping going through thick and thin. The work that Ilfracombe in Bloom does is phenomenal! Planting, weeding, growing, tidying and much more. Planters are purchased and planted, boats filled with beautiful displays. The Memorial Gardens are a delight!
It makes a huge difference to both visitors and the local population. For that I say thank you very much indeed to each and every one of you!
However for me, there is one thing that stands out in all this good work.
Ilfracombe in Bloom is growing and it’s growing because it is capturing that Community Spirit the good people of Ilfracombe are famous for. Initiatives like “treat your street” and encouraging everyone to take part, even if it’s only doing the bit in front of your own property.
All of this is creating one thing…. A pride in Ilfracombe and long may it continue.
